ANOTHER TONGUE IN CHEEK DITTY I WROTE IN 1984 WHEN I LIVED IN KING STREET WAIHI , REGARDING REOPENING OF MARTHA GOLD MINE -WAIHI-NZ,
I actually took a photo of a drilling rig in King Street Waihi, before the reopening of MARTHA MINE, must look it out and put online
THE VICTIM!
Gather round lads and I'll tell you,
of a tale of woe and strife,
of mining days in old WAIHI,
when a young man lost his life!
They were bad days the old days
in Martha underground,
you worked for a pittance in rotten conditions
for that gold it had to be found!
Though the air was rank and fetid
and your lungs were full of dust,
work on you peasants, the Company cried,
work on and earn your crust!
now ugly moods breed ugly deeds
and the miners were fed up,
so out they went in protest,
for they had had enough!
The confrontation was heated lads
and tempers frayed that night
but the miners were determined,
they were fighting for a right!
but their wants fell on deaf ears lads,
the Company was not honour bound,
harsh blows were struck in anger,
and innocent blood stained the ground!
They had tried to stand for human rights
but that was not to be...
so young Evans lay bludgeoned there,
by the minions of the Company!
They laid him in his coffin lads
they laid him in the ground,
a young man in his prime of life
by injustice was struck down,
now call it what you may my friends
it was a sacrifice,
for there will always be a victim
in the fight for human rights!

LOL ex Martha Mine Tommyknocker out of a job!
Miner EVANS, murdered in the WAIHI STRIKE.xt.
One of these photos is the stunning SEDDON Memorial Seddon St., Waihi, paid for by the Miners of the era, and behind this is the old National Bank,
I found and photographed this forlorn part of the Dick Seddon Memorial in the local WAIHI council yards, Union Street, it had been dumped in the local rubbish dump first then rescued and dumped in the yard, so much for the Miners pride and HERITAGE of olden day WAIHI HISTORY eh!
by the way old historic buildings have been demolished and managed to squeeze unseen into oblivion past the Historic trust hmmmmm makes one wonder, who owns the town?
UPDATE 2009..I see someone has a conscience, for on a recent trip to WAIHI, I saw in Seddon St., that the Miners' DICK SEDDON MEMEORIAL has been re erected once more, of course not the original which ended up in the WAIHI DUMP but a pretty good second, and looks very nice..
